Google’s upcoming Pixel 7a may offer Face Unlock: what we know
With Google I/O 2023 fast approaching, the rumor mill for the next affordable Pixel device – the Pixel 7a – has picked up steam. While it’s said to be an incremental update to the Pixel 6a, the phone is expected to come with a second-generation Tensor SoC called the Tensor G2, and now, according to leaker Snoopy Tech, the Pixel 7a will get a key feature that was missing from the Pixel 6a: face unlock.
We’d take it with a grain of salt for now as it hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s more than likely that Google will include this feature as the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro already ship with the Face Unlock feature.
However, it should be noted that despite having face unlock, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro do not allow face unlock when accessing secure apps, including banking apps, and when entering passwords. For those, you need to use the more secure in-display fingerprint sensor.
This could be the same case for the Pixel 7a, as it offers a more secure face unlock that resembles something like infrared scanning on the Pixel 4 series, thanks to the older face scanning hardware.
As for other specifications, the Pixel 7a is expected to sport a 6.1-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and will be offered with a dual camera setup including a primary wide-angle lens and a secondary ultra-wide-angle unit.
Based on the leaked renders, the phone could also offer relatively symmetrical bezels, minimizing the chin and increasing the overall screen-to-body ratio. As for the price, leaks have indicated a sticker price of $499, which would represent a $50 price increase over the Pixel 6a’s $449 price tag.
